În anii ’50, Merham era un orasel adormit de pe litoralul englezesc, unde nu se întâmpla niciodata nimic interesant. Cel putin, asa îl vedeau Lottie si Celia, fetele familiei Holden, care tinea la statutul respectabil în comunitate. Dar cele doua tinere nu-si doreau decât sa plece în explorare si sa-si traiasca viata. Asa ca, atunci când un grup de artisti nomazi se muta în casa numita Arcadia, o frumoasa cladire Art Decó aflata chiar pe malul marii, Lottie si Celia sunt tentate de stilul de viata boem al acestora. Dar întâmplarile din casa au consecine tragice si pe termen lung pentru toti cei implicati. Dupa aproape 50 de ani, Arcadia este renovata si stârneste din nou resentimentele localnicilor mai în vârsta. Casa se reîntoarce la viata, iar secretele îngropate în ea timp de o jumatate de veac îi fac pe protagonisti sa-si puna întrebarea daca poti sa-ti lasi cu adevarat trecutul în urma.
