Middle-aged, single, and living in Germany, Thomas is unhappy with his love life. When Elisa, his chatroom friend in North Carolina, comes into his life, it seems that she might be his soulmate. Through their daily phone calls, emails, and even visits to each other abroad, Thomas starts to uncover the unsettling truths about Elisa's past and how it still haunts her.
