Proza literară a lui Eminescu reprezintă, cercetând-o mai adânc și în toată întinderea ei, expresia unui moment important din dezvoltarea romantismului romanesc: momentul structuralizării estetice, al dimensionării lui spirituale. Eminescu lasă deschise, prin epica sa, cel puțin două drumuri în literatura română: drumul prozei fantastice și cel al epicii filozofice, dând el însuși modele în aceasta privință. "Sărmanul Dionis" și "Avatarii faraonului Tla" rămân două prototipuri de literatură, în care se întâlnesc și se unifică reprezentările unui liric vizionar și incertitudinile unei firi meditative, dârze în aspirația ei de a găsi, cu prețul unor dureroase înfrângeri, soluții în problemele esențiale ale existenței.
