The ship Oostersee is intentionally wrecked on the coast. The villain, Hendrik Bierman, betrothed to Betta Fourie, planned the disaster to take the priceless Eastern cargo for himself. Someone overhearing it, changes everything, and the young Dawie Fourie is knocked unconscious and left for dead on the wreck.

Dawie survives, but now without his memory. Meanwhile, Betta grows uneasy about the nightly sounds echoing on her farm, Môrester. When she shares her fears with Willa de Moreaux, it draws the attention of the mysterious Masked Robber, the only man who can unearth the truth.
