I Am a Cat (1905–1906) is a satirical novel by Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki, narrated by a nameless cat who observes human behavior with sharp wit and irony. Living in the household of Mr. Sneaze (Kushami), a middle-class schoolteacher, the cat offers humorous and critical commentary on Japanese society during the Meiji era, a time of rapid modernization and Western influence. Through a series of loosely connected episodes, the cat mocks intellectual pretensions, social climbing, and moral hypocrisy. The humans around him—teachers, poets, businessmen, and scholars—engage in pompous debates, petty rivalries, and shallow displays of modernity, all of which the cat describes with detached amusement. His outsider perspective allows him to expose the absurdity of human vanity and self-importance.
