But twenty-three-year-old Haru, stargazer and chronic worrier, is still trying to pass her driving test. Then she finds a body in the boot of her car: a woman, stabbed and tortured. There's a murderer on the loose. And it turns out that Haru's driving instructor is an ex-cop with a manic devotion to justice. So, despite the small matter of an impending apocalypse, the two women team up to catch the culprit, no matter where it takes them. After all, the world's not quite over yet...
Akane Araki was born in 1998 in Fukuoka, Japan. She is a graduate of Kyushu University's School of Letters. Murder at the End of the World is her first novel, and it won the prestigious Edogawa Rampo Prize.
I unreservedly loved this book! Great characters, lots of twists and turns, and touches of humour that stop the unique setting - Japan, two months before the end of the world - becoming maudlin. Masterfully executed, and highly recommended - particularly for anyone about to take their driving test...
Quirky, punchy and paradoxically life affirming. The asteroid may be coming, but there are driving lessons to be taken, murders to be solved and people to be cared for. An enthralling tale that looks head on at the end of the world and refuses to blink
The apocalypse looms; why not spend your final days solving a murder?... A refreshing Japanese whodunit with a charming detective duo
