How far would you run to escape what you've done?

Eric Blake ran the length of California, from Redding to Los Angeles, where he became Ethan Arthur, married a black woman, had a child. For twenty years life is good – until LAPD Officer Frank Shank shows up. Threats, blackmail; there's only one way to deal with a ghost from the past like Frank: permanently. Then two FBI agents show up. Frank was their informant, they claim, inside a white-supremacist terrorist group led by Ethan's long-ago best friend turned ex-Navy SEAL – an organisation on the edge of victory inside the movement to burn down America, and from its ashes build an ethnostate.

Ethan must make a choice: return to his hometown to infiltrate the group, or face a federal murder charge. It's no choice at all, and Ethan returns to Redding as the resurrected Eric Blake. But nothing about his mission is as it seems, and Ethan's epic journey into the heart of darkness will coincide with the most frightening and divisive period in recent history – and the dawn of a new America.



Philip Elliott is an Irish author and editor known for crime fiction, including the Angel City series, and for founding the literary magazine Into the Void. Born in Dublin and based in Toronto, he has received nominations for the Pushcart Prize and won a Crime Writers of Canada Award of Excellence. His work often explores desperate characters on the fringes of society. He has now returned to live in Dublin.
