Beam Shop
Backwater
The final novel, from the bestselling and acclaimed author of DRIVE.
Bishop is finally free. He has traded a badge for a Gibson guitar and a late-night jazz set in New York.
But when Carson, the partner who once knew him better than anyone, asks for help with a blood-drenched abandoned car in Bishop's childhood town, Bishop cannot say no. The old town of Anne's Ferry has not changed. It is still a place of half-told stories and long shadows. It is still a place where people vanish.
With Carson missing and a young man brutally murdered, Bishop is pulled into an investigation that leads from a stolen Honda to a veteran haunted by war and to a forgotten violence in the town's own past.
James Sallis returns to the terrain he makes uniquely his own: mercy as the only way to survive a world filled with crime.
Jim Sallis published fiffteen novels, multiple collections of short stories, essays, and poems. He has written about books for the L.A. Times, New York Times, and Washington Post, and for some years served as a books columnist for the Boston Globe. In 2007 he received a lifetime achievement award from Bouchercon. In addition to the feature film Drive, the six Lew Griffin books are under consideration for development as feature films and Driven is optioned to the same team as Drive. Jim teaches novel writing at Phoenix College. He died in 2026.
