Rules for Grown-Ups

Stoic Principles for a Chaotic Age

What if the anxiety, restlessness, and emptiness you feel aren't signs that something is wrong with you—but signs that the structures holding life together have quietly collapsed? In an age of endless noise, algorithmic distraction, and disappearing meaning, we've been handed shallow slogans where our ancestors had wisdom. Rules for Grown-Ups reaches back to the Stoics, to Frankl, Aristotle, and the oldest human stories, and stitches their hard-won insights to the real decisions you face today—your work, your relationships, your children, your suffering.

This is not a book about "living by the rules." It's about learning to separate what you can control from what you can't, to face reality without illusion, and to build a life durable enough to withstand tragedy without collapsing into bitterness.

Inside, you'll discover:

- Why suffering is the price of admission, not a glitch to be optimized away

- How to confront your inner tyrant and reclaim genuine self-governance

- The discipline of truth as a survival skill in an era of manipulation and self-deception

- What ancient myths still know about your grief, temptation, and growth

- How to raise children who can stand the world—and choose the people you let close

- The practice of gratitude and meaning when things are genuinely bad

Stop drifting through a life you never chose. Learn to govern the smallest part of the world you actually can: yourself.

Quinn Halverstrom is an American philosopher who applies the practical ethics of ancient thinkers to the realities of modern life—career, decision-making, and one's relationship with risk and time. Classically educated with a double major in philosophy and history at a leading American university, he earned a doctorate in ancient philosophy and spent roughly twelve years in academia specializing in the Stoic tradition and the ethics of decision-making. Recognizing that the deepest demand for philosophy comes not from lecture halls but from working executives and entrepreneurs, he shifted to independent writing and a closed advisory practice. From decades of reading primary sources and mentoring living clients, he developed his own "School of Clear Action"—a discipline of separating what is within one's power from what is not, and translating every decision out of the fog of emotion into one clear action. Today he runs an independent author's practice, closed mentoring for entrepreneurs and executives, and small reading groups, writing short, dense books that weave the applied principles of ancient philosophers together with modern stories and decision scenarios.
