Your Personal Constitution
Rules for Adult Decisions
What if the entire trajectory of your life was decided by fewer than ten choices — and you left most of them to chance?
Behavioral scientist Ezra Tovell spent twelve years studying the lives of thousands of people and discovered something startling: 80–90% of your satisfaction, wealth, relationships, and health comes down to a handful of "root decisions." Whom you build a life with. How you earn a living. Where you live. Whom you let influence you. What you say no to. Everything else is noise — yet most people obsess over the noise and leave the decisions that matter to inertia and social pressure.
Your Personal Constitution offers a radical alternative: a written set of rules, created by your clearest self, to protect you from your worst patterns in moments of stress, fear, and overconfidence. Drawing on decision science, philosophy, and vivid case studies from Shackleton to the Tylenol recall, Tovell shows you how to make the few choices that count slowly and well.
Inside, you'll discover:
- Why intelligent people repeat the same expensive mistakes for decades — and how to break the loop
- How to build a personal operating system of rules, defaults, and feedback loops
- The art of disagreeing well and designing decisions like an engineer
- How to spot your own ego and blind spots before they cost you
- Ways to surround yourself with people who tell you the truth
- A practical workshop to write, test, and revise your own constitution
Stop optimizing the small stuff. Start governing the decisions that actually shape your life.
Ezra Tovell is a behavioral scientist and philosopher specializing in decision theory, well-being, and the architecture of life choices. Of British-Canadian background, his academic work and current practice span the North America–U.K. axis. He holds a dual education in philosophy and behavioral economics and earned a PhD in decision theory. For roughly twelve years he combined research on long-term life trajectories, systematic biases in decision-making, and what distinguishes a well-lived life from a lesser one with teaching and consulting. His analysis of biographical data across cultures and generations led to the "Root Decisions Method" at the heart of his work, which teaches readers to recognize the few choices that truly matter and treat them with the seriousness they deserve.
