Seven Questions
How to Make a Team Think for Itself
What if the smartest thing a leader can do is stop giving answers?
Most managers are rewarded for speed, certainty, and being the person with the solution. But that reflex creates dependency, weakens judgment, and quietly teaches talented people to stop thinking for themselves. In Seven Questions, consultant and former COO Brennan Renvik shows why curiosity, not advice, is the real engine of a capable, self-reliant team.
Drawing on neuroscience, negotiation theory, psychological safety research, and hard-won lessons from leading a fifteen-hundred-person organization across ten time zones, Seven Questions turns everyday conversations into a discipline anyone can practice. It's a practical guide to leading through better questions, deeper listening, and the courage to stay in the uncertainty a little longer.
Inside, you'll discover:
- Why advice short-circuits thinking and how curiosity builds ownership
- The neuroscience of a good question and how it primes the brain to learn
- How to open hard conversations so people feel safe enough to be honest
- Ways to get beneath the surface and name what people actually want
- How to say no without burning bridges and use silence to draw out truth
- How to handle pushback and difficult personalities by reducing threat, not force
Stop being the bottleneck. Start building a team that thinks for itself.
Brennan Renvik is an American consultant and former operations executive specializing in operational efficiency, leadership, and the personal productivity of technology-company leaders. He earned an engineering degree from a leading American university and an MBA from one of the top U.S. business schools. Over twelve years in the SaaS and fintech industries he rose from head of operations to COO, leading one B2B SaaS company through growth from $7M to $90M in ARR and an exit to a strategic acquirer, and later serving as COO of a fintech unicorn with a team of fifteen hundred people across ten time zones. That last role became the source of his method: watching a large distributed organization at work, he saw that the biggest losses of speed and quality came not from a shortage of people or strategy, but from work that ended without a clear next step. Today he runs his own consulting practice for the CEOs and COOs of scale-up companies, leads closed cohort programs for operations directors, and coaches senior executives in leadership and personal effectiveness. His books explore operational discipline in the era of distributed work, leadership as a daily engineering task, and the personal productivity of the leader.
