Between You and the Thought
A Stoic Step Past Anxiety
What if the anxiety running your life isn't coming from your circumstances at all — but from the stories your mind keeps mistaking for facts?
Most of us don't live inside our problems. We live inside our interpretations of them. In Between You and the Thought, philosopher Quinn Halverstrom shows how a racing heart, a sleepless night, or a spiral of dread begins with a single, quiet move of the mind — and how learning to see that move is the beginning of freedom.
Weaving together ancient Stoic wisdom, modern neuroscience, and real clinical case studies, this short, dense book offers something rarer than positive thinking: an honest, practical way to loosen anxiety's grip without pretending, suppressing, or forcing yourself to feel calm.
Inside, you'll discover:
- Why the gap between an event and your reaction is where all real change happens
- How to separate raw sensation from the story your mind builds around it
- Why resistance — not pain itself — creates lasting suffering
- The truth about why positive thinking often backfires for anxious minds
- How to notice the exact moment a thought "grabs" you and gently return
- A practical 30-day path to build these skills into daily life
You are not your thoughts. You are the one who hears them — and that changes everything.
Quinn Halverstrom is an American philosopher who applies the practical ethics of ancient thinkers to the pressures of modern life — career, decisions, and one's relationship with risk and time. He holds a double major in philosophy and history from a leading American university and a doctorate in ancient philosophy. After roughly twelve years in academia specializing in the Stoic tradition and the ethics of decision-making, he shifted toward independent writing and a closed advisory practice, having found that the deepest need for philosophy comes not from lecture halls but from practicing executives and entrepreneurs. Out of decades of reading primary sources and working with living clients, he developed his "School of Clear Action": a discipline for separating what is within our power from what is not, and translating every decision out of the fog of emotion into one clear action. Today he runs an independent author's practice, closed mentoring for leaders, and small reading groups, writing short, dense books that stitch the applied principles of the ancients to modern stories and real decisions.
