The Clean Decision
A Field Guide to Mental Traps
What if the moments you feel most certain are exactly when your mind is deceiving you?
Every day your brain edits reality without telling you. It sees patterns in noise, rewrites your memories, bends to the crowd, and mistakes confidence for truth. These aren't signs of a broken mind—they're the built-in shortcuts that once kept us alive but now quietly sabotage our biggest decisions.
The Clean Decision is a clear-eyed field guide to the mental traps that distort human judgment—from the invisible gorilla and the hot-hand illusion to sunk costs, groupthink, and the seduction of "free." Drawing on landmark research and unforgettable real-world failures, from the Challenger disaster to Kodak's collapse, it shows why intelligence offers no protection and what actually does.
Inside, you'll discover:
- How System 1 and System 2 thinking shape choices before reason ever arrives
- Why memory is a reconstruction, not a recording—and why confidence isn't proof
- The hidden power of anchoring, framing, and loss aversion over your everyday decisions
- How emotions, overconfidence, and social pressure quietly hijack rational choice
- Practical tools like premortems, decision journals, and checklists that create a saving pause
- How to design habits and environments that protect you from your own certainty
You can't erase your biases—but you can stop them from hiding behind the feeling of clarity.
Ezra Tovell is a behavioral scientist and philosopher specializing in decision theory, well-being, and the architecture of life choices. Of British-Canadian background, his academic work and practice span the North America–U.K. axis. He holds a dual education in philosophy and behavioral economics and earned a PhD in decision theory. For roughly twelve years he combined research on long-term life trajectories and systematic biases in decision-making with teaching and consulting. His work centers on a striking finding: that the shape of a human life is largely determined by a handful of "root decisions," and that the central skill of adulthood is making the few choices that truly matter slowly and well.
