Smart Brain, Foolish Choices
A Catalog of Mistakes
Why does your intelligent, capable brain keep leading you into the very same mistakes—again and again?
You are not irrational by accident. Your mind fails in regular, predictable patterns: it anchors on random numbers, drifts toward the middle option, overreacts to the word "free," clings to what it owns, and rewrites your values the moment emotion runs hot. In Smart Brain, Foolish Choices, neuroscientist Theo Whessler assembles a compact field guide to the traps your brain sets for you every single day.
Grounded in landmark behavioral science—from Kahneman and Tversky to the psychology of placebos, reciprocity, and procrastination—this book translates decades of laboratory research into practical rules you can actually use. The promise is direct: once you can name these traps, you can stop falling into them twice.
Inside, you'll discover:
- How anchoring, decoys, and the "tyranny of the middle option" quietly steer choices you believe are your own
- Why "free" shuts down your judgment—and how hidden costs in time, attention, and data slip past you
- The hot-cold empathy gap that lets emotion rewrite your values in real time
- Why keeping every option open secretly drains your focus, money, and peace of mind
- How expectations, brands, and price tags change not just what you say you like, but what you genuinely experience
- Practical commitment devices, checklists, and choice-architecture tools to outsmart your own biases
Stop trying harder—start redesigning the conditions in which you think, and make better choices almost automatic.
Theo Whessler is an Austrian neuroscientist and nonfiction author who studies the systematic errors the brain makes against our will—at work, in investing, in relationships, and in everyday decision-making. He studied biology and cognitive science at a leading German-speaking university and earned a doctorate in the neuroscience of decision-making. For roughly fifteen years he worked at a major European research institute, specializing in neuroimaging, risk modeling, and the systematic biases of perception. Drawing on decades of laboratory data and interviews with practitioners, he developed his compact catalog of the brain's most persistent decision traps—each explained through its neurobiological mechanism and paired with a simple procedure to defuse it. Today he runs an independent author's practice, offers closed advisory work for investors and executives, and leads small cohort programs for analysts. He writes short, applied books that translate laboratory neuroscience into practical rules.
