In Grundriss der Psychologie, Eduard von Hartmann gives a concise systematic account of psychology from the standpoint of his philosophy of the unconscious. The book moves from consciousness, feeling, sensation, volition, memory, association, the ego, and the relation between soul and body to subconscious states, physiological foundations, and the absolutely unconscious. Unlike Hartmann’s Die moderne Psychologie, which is a critical history of nineteenth-century German psychology, this work is a theoretical outline. It presents Hartmann’s own psychology: a layered account of the upper consciousness, the relatively unconscious, the physiological unconscious, and unconscious psychic activity. The result is a late and compact statement of one of the central pre-Freudian philosophies of mind and unconscious life.
