The Emotional Brain

The System That Decides for You

The Emotional Brain
NEU
What if most of your worst decisions weren't a failure of willpower, but simply the wrong system taking the wheel? Every day, three brains compete inside you: an ancient survival system, an emotional system of connection, and a late-arriving system of reason. When they fall out of sync, you snap, freeze, overthink, or self-sabotage — not because you're weak, but because emotion arrived first. In The Emotional Brain, neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Gregory Bicaj blends two decades of laboratory research with real clinical practice to reveal how feeling shapes health, judgment, relationships, and the whole of a life well lived.

Drawing on landmark science — from Damasio and Kahneman to the Harvard Study of Adult Development — he shows that emotions are not the enemy of reason but the foundation that makes reasoning usable.

Inside, you'll discover:

- Why the amygdala hijack makes you react before you understand — and how to widen the space between alarm and action

- How naming your feelings quiets the brain's threat system and restores clarity

- Why anger, anxiety, and sadness are teachers, not enemies carrying vital information

- The real science of delayed gratification, motivation, flow, and hope

- How empathy, connection, and repair build stronger relationships, marriages, and teams

- Why stress and childhood adversity live in the body — and how emotional repair remains possible for life

Learn to recognize which system is driving — and calmly take back control of your life.

Gregory Bicaj is an Albanian-Swiss neuroscientist and clinical psychologist working at the intersection of brain research, behavior, and real clinical practice. Educated in biology and psychology at a leading European university, he holds a doctorate in behavioral neuroscience. For roughly twenty years he combined laboratory research on stress, emotion regulation, and decision-making with a clinical practice treating patients struggling with anxiety disorders, addictions, and chronic burnout. Out of this dual perspective he developed the "Three Brains Principles," a working model of the survival, emotional, and reasoning systems that run within every modern human. Today he leads a private clinical practice and closed programs for executives and specialists, and writes books in which laboratory neuroscience and clinical experience meet as equals.
