The Normal That Isn't
What Modern Life Does to the Body
What if the exhaustion, tension, and quiet suffering you call "normal adult life" is actually a slow injury inflicted by the way we live?
Drawing on decades of research in neuroscience, trauma studies, and social medicine, The Normal That Isn't reveals how chronic stress, childhood adversity, loneliness, and inequality enter the body and reshape our biology. This is not a tale of individual failure, but a compassionate investigation into why so many of us are unwell in a wealthy, advanced world.
Philosopher Adriano Solera moves from the science of allostatic load and adverse childhood experiences to the wisdom of the body itself, arguing that mind and body are not separate systems but one, viewed from different angles.
Inside, you'll discover:
- Why chronic suffering has become the baseline, and why that should alarm us
- How the body keeps a record of what the mind refuses to hear
- The hidden biological cost of the "false self" we build to be loved and accepted
- How early childhood shapes adult biology, from stress hormones to cellular aging
- Why talk therapy alone often fails, and what genuine healing requires
- How community, connection, and social justice are matters of physical health
Your body has been trying to tell you the truth. It is time to listen.
Adriano Solera is an Italian philosopher and nonfiction author working at the intersection of the contemplative tradition and the applied ethics of everyday life. He studied philosophy and theology at one of the oldest European universities and spent several years in a Catholic monastic community, immersing himself in the discipline of silence, the rhythm of the day, and contemplative reading. He later returned to secular work without breaking from what that experience had given him. For roughly twenty years, Solera combined philosophical writing with a private practice of accompanying people through major life transitions, from career changes to mid-life re-evaluations of values. Out of the union of monastic and secular perspectives, he developed his "Philosophy of Slow Presence," a worldview holding that the modern person suffers not from a shortage of goals but from a chronic desynchronization with their own life. Today he runs an independent author's practice and a closed accompaniment service for mature executives and entrepreneurs. He writes unhurried, dense books about everyday ethics, time, and maturity.
