Kosovo, 1996. Eight-year-old Kujtim and his family travel from Finland to spend the summer at his grandfather's house. A shy, gentle boy, he is unfamiliar with the harsh realities of life in his motherland and quickly feels othered and unprotected in a place so different from what he knows. What he witnesses and experiences during those months changes him forever.

Years later, Kujtim, now in his thirties, lives in Finland and is an internationally acclaimed author. Insecure about the direction of his life and writing career, he returns to war-torn Kosovo, hoping to confront and reconcile with his past, real and imagined.

A Cow Gives Birth at Night is an extraordinary and essential story about masculinity and migrant identity, growing up without safety, and what we inherit from those who came before us.
