Haan, Germany, October 1991. After a golden wedding anniversary, a photographer heads home on foot, straight through the Osterholz woods. He could have gone by bus. But he promised his daughter Jenny a pumpkin with a face. He has known these woods for thirty years. Today, between two hollies, there is a trail that did not exist before. It leads to old Pit Seven. There is a fresh roll of film in his camera. Thirty-six exposures, loaded out of habit. The pumpkins are already waiting at the end of the trail.

Between two hollies, he finds a trail that was never there. At the edge of the old lime pit, he finds a clearing full of carved faces.
