März 2020 in der Provence: Ausgerechnet während der pandemiebedingten Ausgangssperre verschwindet eine junge Frau an einem alten Kanal, der mitten durch einen Berg führt. Capitaine Roger Blanc und seine Kollegen finden bloß einen Hinweis: den linken Schuh des Opfers, der neben dem Wasser steht, als hätte ihn jemand mit Absicht dort platziert. Genauso war es schon vor 23 Jahren, als am selben Ort vier Frauen verschwanden, von denen ebenfalls nur die linken Schuhe zurückblieben. Diese Verbrechensserie wurde niemals aufgeklärt. Schlägt der Täter von einst jetzt wieder zu? Als nach wenigen Tagen ein zweites Opfer vermisst wird und wieder nur ein Schuh zurückbleibt, wird der Druck auf Blanc unerträglich.
