The debt always comes due. Danny Pyle is going to settle it — or become it.

He jammed the machine. He laid the siege. He turned forty years of foreclosed accounts into a war the Concord can't win in the daylight. But the company has stopped trying to close the accounts it can't collect — now it's going to erase them, and everyone Danny saved is scheduled for disposal.

So the lowest Porter on the boards is going back down. Past the records. Past the breathing stacks. All the way to the floor nothing returns from — the source, the thing that decides a person can be foreclosed at all.

What waits at the bottom is worse than Danny imagined, and more human. To settle the debt for good, he'll have to carry a weight the whole world was built to make unbearable, and refuse — at the one place it's load-bearing — to set it down. It will cost him everything the descent hasn't already taken.

The Concord has never lost on its own ground. It has never met a Porter who read the math, all the way to the bottom, and answered: correct, and it doesn't matter.
